What’s in the Bag?

Home » Gear » What’s in the Bag?

Traveling in a Jeep is a challenge because there is a limited amount of space for gear. The Trasharoo is a rugged bag that straps around the spare tire. There are similar products on the market, but my only experience is with the Trasharoo. It is a great solution for holding trash, of course, but it is also great for holding gear that does not fit so well inside the Jeep. Particularly gear that tends to get dirty with use.

I have had this Trasharoo for several years and other than a small hole where it has been rubbing against the tire (that spot is now protected from further abrasion by Gorilla Tape), it looks nearly new. It does get dirty of course, but part of my post-trip routine is to simply throw it in the washing machine. For around $50 back in 2021 the Trasharoo was a decent value and I fully expect to get a few more years out of this one.

The Trasharoo is great for holding trash, and I do keep a roll of 30-gallon garbage bags inside for just that purpose. But it is large enough to hold the trash along with other gear. I keep an off-road base for the Hi-Lift Jack, a set of GoTreads traction boards, and a set of wheel chocks inside the bag. Other than the roll of garbage bags, these are all bulky items that would take up a lot of space inside the Jeep. They are also rugged plastic items that are not going to get damaged, bouncing around inside the bag.

I am not a big fan of hanging stuff on the outside of the Jeep because I tend to travel through a lot of very tight spaces (my Jeep has lots of tree branch “pinstripes”!) but the Trasharoo on the spare tire has never been an issue. It was fairly inexpensive and has allowed me to carry some bulky gear that would otherwise have to be stuffed under the backseat (which is already stuffed with a Goal Zero battery and a toiletry bag) or omitted altogether. Long distance off road travel is always a compromise between space and utility, but the Trasharoo has earned its keep.
